TASHA FOUND!

Tasha was brought back to safety tonight--pictures to come. Thank you to everyone who helped--all the K9 Lifesavers volunteers, especially Danny and Jessica, but also the non-K9 volunteers (Sonia, Donna, and Lisa). It takes a village . . .

Now Tasha needs a foster and a forever home!

Here's her story, as told on LostDogsFound:

Tasha in better diggs than she's been in for the last several weeks. Well maybe better than any home she ever had before!

Tasha was a rescue that was shipped to a Washington DC location, along with a lot of other dogs, probably from some rural area where dogs have a much harder time finding homes. Lots of rescues bring dogs in from rural locations surrounding the Washington metropolitan area, foster them while they ready them for forever homes, and find those homes for them.

So, the story goes that pretty much the moment that Tasha arrived in town, she took off. Over the weeks, there were dozens and dozens of sightings – maybe a hundred or more. There were feeding station and trapping efforts going on, surveillance cameras, and a lot of fliering to help generate those sighting calls.

It became routine that she would wander in and out of backyards in a residential area – even fenced yards. Some neighbors were cooperative and interested in helping, others not so much. Eventually my partners came up with the idea to try to trap her in a yard, and I think some attempts were made by property owners to do it. But an example of an attempt that didn’t go well was one where there were two gates and they’d only close one, so she could just walk out the other one.

Now, the last few days there have been some high winds. And late Monday afternoon, there were high winds behind the gate of the yard that Tasha was nosing around in. And bam!!!! Gate closed behind her!!!!

The fence was a 4’ fence with some kind of 2’ lattice work making it more like 6’ high. Luckily she’s not a jumper; instead, she howled for help!!! The homeowners heard her, ran out to find a flier, and called the number. Several of my team members converged on the yard. There was one area where there was no lattice work, so one team member went around and stood outside the fence while the others went in – just in case she tried to jump. They moved in on her ready to have to chase her around the yard to be able to leash her, but as it turned out, by this time, she was done running.

And with that, the story ended as abruptly as it started!!! She’s now entered rescue, is at a foster home, and a forever home is being sought for her.

Sightings and Pics!

Tasha is back at the transport site again. She was seen at 44th and Garrison by two different people at 5:45.

Also we have pictures of her eating out of the trap!! Hopefully in another few days of luring her further and further into it we can set it and catch her!!

A bunch of our flyers have been ripped down from the neighborhood around Rodmans - if anybody is available to help re-flyer let us know!

4/3 Sighting

Our girl is back near the traps and feeding stations. She was sighted this morning at 9 AM on Andover Rd. near Western.

Another sighting - Corner of Murray, Westport, and Merivale heading down Murray towards her favorite back yard at 9:05 AM.

SIGHTINGS: 04/01/09

We had two sightings of Tasha today--which is a big relief because we were worried she may have moved to another area after the trap incident yesterday.

She was seen in the neighborhood that borders the west side of River today, between Western and Little Falls.

A set back

We were so close to trapping Tasha today--but the trap sprang and she was able to wiggle out of the trap. We're now concerned that maybe she won't go in the trap a second time, so we're concentrating on having her learn to trust the trap again and also looking into some other options.

If you've seen Tasha, we want to hear from you. If you have a fenced in yard and have seen Tasha in your yard, we REALLY want to hear from you!

Lots of Sightings!!

Well our girl was seen all over her familiar stomping grounds today. At 7:45 this morning she was running up Reno and took a left on Albermarle and into some backyards there. From there she headed over to the alleys between Harrison and Garrison and 44th and 45th where there's apparently some good garbage. From there she headed out towards River and then into the Alley that runs behind Fessenden between River and 44th.

Then finally she made it over to her favorite hangout on Murray where she was almost caught. Hopefully we're getting closer!

She's on her loop again...

Sighting this afternoon at around 5 pm 3/29 in a wooded area behind 400 Thornapple St. We're hoping this is just a stop on the same loop she made last week (see the tracking map) and before long she'll be back in the Rodman's area where our feeding stations and traps are!

UPDATE: The same folks who saw her at 5 PM just saw her at 7PM around the corner at 7106 Meadow Lane. Fingers crossed but it seems to be consistent with her loop. Hopefully she's on her way back down...

UPDATE: Another sighting at 10 PM on the alley that runs parallel to River approaching Brandywine. She came out of the alley and made a left turn on Brandywine towards 42nd, turned left up 42nd and then disappeared in the alley on the right before Chesapeake.

Holding off on additional flyering

Since Tasha seems to have found a little are where she's comfortable, we don't need to continue flyering. Instead, we'll monitor our feeding stations, and otherwise stay out of the area and avoid scaring her off.

Our traps out--we just need Tasha to get curious enough to enter one!

We've seen her with our own eyes!!

This afternoon Tasha slept comfortably in a bed she made of leaves in the back yard on Murray where she's been many times. She slept there most of the day and then when she left we set up a trap and a feeding station. Let's keep our fingers crossed!!

SIGHTINGS: 03/28/09, AM

Tasha has been hanging out today at her spot on Murray--and that's fine with us! We want her to get chill and relaxed in one spot, so that we can eventually trap her there.

SIGHTINGS: 03/27/09, Fessenden area, Sunday outreach

Tasha was seen twice today at Fessenden and 43rd, in the AM and again at around 11:00 pm. She was also seen at Keokuk St and Montgomery (by River Road and Western Avenue). Other folks saw Tasha on Fessenden and 43rd around 6:45 am 9:45 pm, so Tasha seems pretty relaxed there. She was also back on Murray in the morning. We're so glad to have her back in an area where we've seen her before.

We really hope we're able to trap her soon, so we can bring her back to safety and start to take down the flyers!

Sunday

We still need help to spread the word--join us on Sunday for our outreach campaign. We'll be meeting at 11:00 at the Bethesda Public Pool: 6300 Little Falls Pkwy & Hillandale Road, Bethesda, MD. Hope to see you then!

Another Sighting! 3/27/2009 7:45 AM on Murray St.

This is a spot where she's been before and we actually had a trap set up, but we kept catching raccoons so we had to remove it. She's back in familiar territory and within a short trot of multiple feeding stations and hopefully traps. So hopefully we are getting closer to catching her!

Folks are out flyering today and another group will be out Sunday morning. We also need help getting flyers to area businesses, churches, schools, and metro riders! If you can help with flyering or anything else please let us know!

New Sighting!! 03/26/09, AM

Our girl has finally reappeared back in her favorite stomping grounds within a few blocks of the transport location. She was seen this AM, 3/26, on Fessenden between Reno and Wisconsin! While we are excited she's back in the area where we have feeding stations and traps set up, we need to get flyers up on that side of Wisconsin ASAP!! Please let us know if you can help!

UPDATE - turns out she may have been on the other side of Wisconsin on Fessenden between 43rd and 44th sniffing around some garbage cans on the North side of the street. We still need to flyer more to be sure though so we can get some more regular sightings!!

Something is eating from two of our feeding stations

This is great news--fingers crossed (again) that it is Tasha.

We're going to try some night-time surveillance. Who's in?

Tuesday, March 24, 2009

No sightings--but still hopeful

We haven't had any sightings, despite our flyering this weekend. This either means that Tasha has moved out of the area, or she's really hunkered down and gone nocturnal. We have something eating at one of our feeding stations--we hope it's Tasha!

Have you seen Tasha? Call us!

Great flyering effort

Long weekend! We managed to flyer all the areas we wanted to hit. Thank you so much to everyone who came out to help--we had a huge area to cover, and we did it!

On Saturday, folks were able to cover the entire area near the intersection of Little Falls and Mass Ave--which is still where we think Tashs is probably hunkered down. The pet tracker came out and run a good track for us--which ended up with Tasha right back at the Capital Crescent trail and Little Falls.

On Sunday, we covered the new area in Chevy Chase and Bethesda where Tasha was tracked, our tracker came out again to help out, and we filled in some of the walking areas around Little Falls Parkway.

We have our feeding stations up and active, and are now just waiting for that sighting call!

Thanks, all, for your help!

Expanding the area

Our pet tracker traced Tasha all through Chevy Chase, and then over to Bethesda. We need to get out and flyer the area between Connecticut Wisconsin, from to Leland on the north to Bradley on the south, and then head west across Bradley and down to Arlington Road.

Here's the map of the track from yesterday.

We need all the help we can get! If you can help, please let us know!

Sightings from Thursday, 03/19/09

While out flyering today, we had two sightings reported, both from Thursday. This is a huge relief because it means that Tasha has not left the area.

One sighting was at Little Falls and Ventnor, and the other back in the field near Rodman's, but coming from the east side of Wisconsin around 7 pm--so we need to flyer the east side.

Here are the details on the Thursday sighting near Rodman's:

They were driving on Wisconsin toward Tenley - so Rodman's was on their right. Tasha came down Garrison from their left and crossed Wisconsin in front of them. They followed her in the car down Garrison and then to the right on 44th over by the metro bus depot. She then bolted down one of the alleys toward Western/River.

Pet tracker on her way!

Our friend Sam, with Pure Gold Pet Trackers, is on her way to help us track Tasha. Sam needs a scent item to give to her tracking dog--and we didn't have one until today (we had to find Tasha's collar first!). This is a huge help, especially since we haven't seen Tasha in three days!

Fingers crossed that Sam can help us figure out where Tasha's been hanging out!

Flyering and search party on Saturday--Join us!

Tasha snapped her collar last Saturday’s right from transport. Since then, we've been desperately trying to track her down. We thought we had her contained to an area where we had traps set and feeding stations established, but she got spooked and is now roaming. The last reported sighting of her was yesterday at noon on Little Falls Parkway running in the direction of Massachusetts Ave. While some folks have kindly volunteered today and last night, the primary search party is
starting to get exhausted from 3-4 hours a night of flyering/searching. WE NEED HELP THIS SATURDAY AM!!!!!

We are trying to put together a big flyering effort for Saturday
morning to hit all the neighborhoods, parks, trails, etc near the
location where she was last seen. We need as many volunteers as
possible to cover as much ground as possible. Please, if you can spare
any time at all it would be greatly appreciated. If you can't make it
Saturday morning but want to pitch in on your own time please let us
know and we'd be happy to provide you with supplies and a map of where we're trying to cover.

We are planning to meet at 10 AM on Saturday near the playground in Fort Bayard Park (River Road and Western Ave)- please join us and
let's try to save this dog before she's hit by a car!

Please email Jessica at JessicaW@k9lifesavers.org if you can make it.

P.S. We will have enough flyers for everyone, but would appreciate if
you could bring a staple gun or tape to hang them.

Thanks!!!

03/19/09: No sightings

We had no sightings today--which means Tasha is in an area we haven't flyered. Please help us get more flyers up around the area where she was most recently seen:

We need more flyers on River between Western and Little Falls. We need flyers on the trees (no telephone poles) on Little Falls between River and Mass. We need flyers on Mass between Little Falls and Western. We need more flyers on Baltimore between River and Mass and around the Westbrook elementary school - really that whole neighborhood between River and Mass and Western and Little Falls.

Please help!

SIGHTINGS, 03/18/09: Heading west

Tasha checked out a new area today. She was seen around 11:40 AM crossing River Rd and running down Newport Ave, then at Wisconsin and Western, then 12:00 on Little Falls Parkway between River and Mass Ave., heading toward Mass on the Maryland side. She was also seen at Baltimore Ave and Westridge heading toward Mass around the same time.

Yesterday, she was seen on Murry Road, right near River Road.

We still need help getting the word out--if you're on a listserve in that area, please let folks know that we want to hear from them if they see Tasha! Plus we need to flyer this new area!

Sightings, 03/17/09

Our girl has been a little less visible today--but was seen around 12:40 near Western and River, heading toward Bloomingdale's at 12:40.

She was also seen around 9 at Harrison and Western, again near GEICO. She loves the GEICO area as a safe haven--and GEICO has agreed to help us!

We had one more sighting call--scary, though. 41st and Garrison, which is on the east side of Wisconsin Avenue. If she is really crossing Wisconsin, we need all the help we can get to trap her--that's a really busy road!

Please help spread the word! If you can flyer, let us know and we'll send you the flyer!

Thanks!

Tasha is lost

Tasha, our tan/brown 45 lb. lab/shepherd mix, snapped her collar and ran off from transport yesterday. We have had several sightings of her today within ten blocks or so of the transport drop-off. She's terrified of people and dogs so it's very difficult to get close to her.

Right now, the most important thing is to get as many flyers up as possible so people in the neighborhood know to call if they see her. Lots of nice folks are already keeping an eye out for her, but we need as many people as possible looking for her. Please let us know if you can help flyer!

PLEASE CALL 202-246-3332 WITH ANY SIGHTINGS

Here's more info about Tasha:

Name: Tasha

Breed: Shepherd/Lab Mix

Approximate Age: 1-2 years

Approximate Weight: 45 lbs.

Currently Living at: Shelter--Tasha needs a foster!!

Meet Tasha! Tasha is a 1-2 year old Shepherd/Lab mix who would LOVE to have a home to call her own. Tasha came to the shelter with her two puppies who were quickly adopted and is now patiently waiting her turn.

Still a pup herself, Tasha loves to play. Her puppies used to play chase with her around the doghouse at the shelter; now she just goofs around on her own! Tasha would love an active family to go on walks or hikes with and would be a star at a fenced dog park. Of course after all that exercise she would love to cuddle up for some naptime!

Like most shelter dogs, Tasha is going to need a refresher in Housetraining 101. She is likely crate trained. We don't know how she feels about cats but can surely find out! Tasha is heartworm positive. We will coordinate with her adopters to get her treatment.
